A typical LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) system or ALTM (Airborne Laser Terrain Mapper) is used to gather XYZ coordinate information for surface and underwater terrain. LiDAR data can be used for a variety of applications including road construction, mining, oil & gas exploration, forestry, urban planning, and landform deformation studies.
Benefits of using airborne LiDAR systems:
Data can be gathered during the day or at night.
Extreme precision (±15cm elevation accuracy).
Can obtain elevation information much faster than traditional methods.
Laser can penetrate the toughest vegetation allowing us to prepare bare earth surface models.
Can be used on both helicopter and fixed-wing aircrafts.
Example: Image produced from LiDAR point data showing a top view of watercourses and vegetation. HSV colour shading applied for visual differentiation between ground and canopy. A 3D Isometric View can also be rendered for usage as an alternative
visualization tool during presentations.
